چکیده

When extracting the weak lensing shear signal, one may employ either locally normalized or globally normalized shear estimators. The former is the standard approach when estimating cluster masses, while the latter is the more common method among peak finding efforts. While both approaches have identical signal-to-noise in the weak lensing limit, it is possible that higher order corrections or systematics considerations make one estimator preferable over the other. In this paper, we consider the efficacy of both estimators within the context of stacked weak lensing mass estimation in the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We find the two estimators have nearly identical statistical precision, even after including higher order corrections, but that these corrections must be incorporated into the analysis to avoid observationally relevant biases in the recovered masses. We also demonstrate that finite bin-width effects may be significant if not properly accounted for, and that the two estimators exhibit different systematics, particularly with respect to contamination of the source catalog by foreground galaxies. Thus, the two estimators may be employed as a systematics cross-check of each other. Stacked weak lensing in the DES should allow for the mean mass of galaxy clusters to be calibrated to ≈ 2% precision (statistical only), which can improve the figure of merit of the DES cluster abundance experiment by a factor of ∼ 3 relative to the self-calibration expectation. A companion paper (Schmidt & Rozo 2010) investigates how the two types of estimators considered here impact weak lensing peak finding efforts. Subject headings: cosmology: clusters

Constraints on gravity on cosmic scales with upcoming large-scale structure surveys.

We consider how upcoming, prospective large-scale structure surveys, measuring galaxy weak lensing and position in tandem with the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies, constrain cosmic scale modifications to general relativity. In such theories, both the homogeneous expansion history and the growth of large-scale structure can have signatures of the modification. We consider an...

Cosmological models discrimination with Weak Lensing

Weak gravitational lensing provides a unique method to map directly the dark matter in the Universe. The majority of lensing analyses uses the two-point statistics of the cosmic shear field to constrain the cosmological model yielding degeneracies, such as that between σ8 and Ωm, respectively the r.m.s. of the mass fluctuations at a scale of 8Mpc/h and the matter density parameter both at z = 0...

Sample variance in photometric redshift calibration: cosmological biases and survey requirements

We use N-body/photometric galaxy simulations to examine the impact of sample variance of spectroscopic redshift samples on the accuracy of photometric redshift (photo-z) determination and calibration of photo-z errors. We estimate the biases in the cosmological parameter constraints from weak lensing and derive requirements on the spectroscopic follow-up for three different photo-z algorithms c...

Optimal Surveys for Weak Lensing Tomography

Weak lensing surveys provide a powerful probe of dark energy through the measurement of the mass distribution of the local Universe. Systematic errors in future weak-lensing surveys: requirements and prospects for self-calibration

We study the impact of systematic errors on planned weak-lensing surveys and compute the requirements on their contributions so that they are not a dominant source of the cosmological parameter error budget. The generic types of error we consider are multiplicative and additive errors in measurements of shear, as well as photometric redshift errors. In general, more powerful surveys have strong...
